Project Overview

A major national energy organisation commissioned SPD to conduct a comprehensive global trend survey covering three workstreams: the latest technologies for well integrity evaluation; advanced methods for well plug and abandonment; and quantitative risk assessment methodologies for CO₂ leakage from wells at CCS sites. The study was driven by the accelerating global decommissioning workload and growing focus on re-utilising existing wells for CCS/CCUS developments.

SPD’s Approach

SPD structured the study in three workstreams. Well Integrity & P&A Technology Review: 50+ technologies assessed across diagnostics, barrier placement, tubular cutting and combination packages, evaluated against NORSOK and OEUK guidelines. Regulatory Review: well abandonment requirements across multiple jurisdictions synthesised into a single coherent framework. CO₂ QRA Assessment: three methodologies evaluated — NRAP-Open-IAM, REX-CO2 and FMECA — with SWOT analysis and fit-for-purpose guidance.

Results & Value Delivered

✔ 198-Page Reference Report — Comprehensive guide enabling technical teams to orient themselves within the global technology landscape.

✔ 50+ Technologies Assessed — Across diagnostics, barrier placement, tubular cutting and combination packages.

✔ Three CO₂ QRA Methods Evaluated — Clear recommendation: no single tool sufficient; guidance on which to use for each purpose.
