Well Engineering Studies That Drive Better Well Decisions

Bad well decisions are often not engineering failures — they are study failures. Wrong pore pressure prognosis, uncalibrated geomechanics, offset well data never properly reviewed. The cost of getting a study wrong shows up later, in the drilling programme, in NPT, in a well that does not perform as expected.

Superior Performance Design provides well engineering studies that are structured around a specific decision. Not a report to file — an answer to the question that prompted the work, with the evidence and uncertainty clearly set out so the operator can act on it.

Our Well Engineering Studies

  • Offset well analysis and data review — systematic collation, synthesis and calibration of existing well data across heterogeneous well stocks, including data-limited and recently-acquired assets.
  • Pore pressure and fracture gradient prediction — prediction, calibration against offset data, and uncertainty characterisation. We do not deliver a single-point estimate and call it calibrated; we define the range and carry it into the well design.
  • Geomechanical assessment — wellbore stability modelling, breakout and washout prediction, mud weight window definition, borehole trajectory optimisation to reduce instability risk.
  • Well feasibility and candidate screening — structured technical screening of sidetrack, reactivation or new well candidates against defined viability criteria, with non-viable candidates eliminated early and engineering resource concentrated on genuine opportunities.
  • Sidetrack and reactivation feasibility — concept design, risk register, and ±30% cost estimates for viable candidates, with NPV-ranked prioritisation to support capital allocation decisions.
  • Coiled tubing drilling vs conventional drilling comparisons — independent comparative assessments with sensitivity-driven cost models that remain useful as market conditions evolve.
  • CCS and gas storage well candidate assessment — subsurface evaluation and well candidate screening for carbon storage and underground gas storage developments.

How We Approach Study Work

We establish what decision the study is supporting before we start. Every deliverable is oriented toward that decision — the format, the level of detail, and the framing of uncertainty are all calibrated to be useful to the person making the call.

Where data is incomplete, we do not wait for better data. We build a risk framework that allows work to proceed with uncertainty explicitly quantified — particularly valuable on recently-acquired assets, mature fields with incomplete records, and new basin entries.

Proven Outcomes

Technical screening on a mature onshore field identified three viable sidetrack candidates from a wider set, protecting the operator from committing capital to opportunities with fatal technical flaws. Both executed wells performed above production forecast. On a deepwater exploration well, pore pressure and fracture gradient work identified that the operator’s prognosis was optimistic in a critical section — a finding that shaped the casing design before spud.
