Project Overview

An operator preparing to mobilise a multi-well drilling programme engaged SPD to design and implement the full contracting framework for the campaign. The operator had an experienced technical team but lacked the dedicated contracting resource needed to develop fit-for-purpose contracts across the full drilling supply chain in the time available. SPD was appointed to lead the contracting strategy, develop all work scopes and compensation schedules, and put in place a KPI-driven performance management framework.

SPD’s Approach

SPD began by developing a contracting strategy aligned to the operator’s objectives, risk appetite and timeline, establishing the appropriate commercial structure for each contract. For each contract, SPD authored technically detailed work scopes written specifically for the well programme. Compensation schedules were structured with tiered day-rates and explicit NPT rate definitions. The KPI framework was developed collaboratively with each contractor, covering HSE performance, equipment reliability, NPT frequency and responsiveness, each with a defined measurement methodology and consequence.
